Wine lovers the world over now have something to celebrate. Billionaire entrepreneur and serial wine collector William I. Koch has just put up half of his 43,000 bottle collection for auction on Sotheby’s.
Why on Earth anyone would have that many bottles of wine is beside the point (#BillionaireGoals). What should be duly noted however is Koch’s realisation that no matter how many dinner parties he throws, he won’t be getting through every bottle in his lifetime. Hence the decision to put up some of the most prized drops for sale.
Avid wine lovers can expect to see ultra rare samples such as 20th century vintages like ten bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 which is earmarked to fetch between US,000 to US0,000. Other prized collections include over 125 lots of Chateau Latour and a special concentration of the renowned 1961 vintage which includes a 6-litre bottle with an expected value between ,000 and ,000. If your bank accounts aren’t yet tickled, try a collection of 4.5-litre Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Jeroboams and 6-litre Methuselahs expected to be worth up to US0,000.

Koch explained via a press release that, “with around 43,000 bottles, I could not possibly consume everything in my cellar, so I am delighted to offer this selection to allow collectors all over the world to enjoy the glorious moments that come with these wines.”
Jamie Ritchie, CEO & President Americas and Asia Sotheby’s Wine has also assured the public that Koch’s collection will not just be an offloading of second rate wines.
“Bill Koch has one of the greatest cellars in the world, packed full of legendary wines that all collectors want to try. Bill focused on the highest quality: the greatest producers from each region, together with the best vintages.”
The wine sale of the century will be split into 2,700 lots and be offered up over three days from May 19th to the 21st. The total sale is expected to bring in between US.5 to US million, making it one of the most expensive totals to ever grace a Sotheby’s wine auction.
Koch should have a healthy 23,000 bottles left in his extravagant Palm Beach wine cellar once the sale has concluded. Put your bids in here.
