How to Keep Unsalted Butter Fresh

Unsalted butter is useful in the kitchen for reducing salt intake and for giving a fresher flavor to cakes, candies, and other foods you're creating. However, as salt is a preservative, unsalted butter lacks this benefit and tends to spoil more easily.

Steps

  1. Check the use-by date when purchasing unsalted butter.Aim to buy one with a good amount of time before it reaches this date. Choose a smaller stick or block (they usually come in small sticks anyway) so that you can use it faster and replenish as needed with a freshly purchased one.
  2. Use the unsalted butter quickly.If you plan to use the butter within two weeks, store it in the refrigerator.Keep it wrapped to prevent other fridge flavors from reaching it. Once opened, the two week timeline begins.
  3. If you cannot consume the unsalted butter quickly, freeze it.Wrap the butter well in foil to avoid other flavors from mingling with it. Before wrapping, consider cutting the butter into smaller chunks that you can remove for use as needed. Place a resealable freezer bag over the butter to prevent odor penetration. Place in the freezer.
  4. Thaw.When you need to use the frozen butter, remove a portion from the freezer the day before. Allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

    Fridge, if you put it in the freezer it will be rigid and hard to cut and spread. In the fridge, it will stay soft enough to be flexible, but not liquid. The ideal fridge temperature for butter to be the right consistency is around 2-3 degrees Celsius. That said, you can freeze butter for later use. Just take it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge about a day before you want to use it.
