Gothic Coffee Table

Materials and tools:

All components of the coffee table (tabletop, 4 legs, board) that are used in this project are easy to buy in the store (now many stores sell the necessary "semi-finished products" and use them for creativity). Dimensions can be changed at your discretion.

  1. 5/4 "x24" x48 "worktop (1);
  2. 21/4 "pine feet (4);
  3. 3 / 4x3 "1 / 2x96 pine plank (2);
  4. self-tapping screws, dowels, wood glue, special corners;
  5. sandpaper (coarse, medium, fine);
  6. a few brushes, a rubber roller;
  7. Scotch;
  8. saw;
  9. drill, screwdriver;
  10. laser printer;
  11. scabs.

Step 1

Designing and designing the future table.

Once the dimensions of the table are known, we proceed to design development. We advise you to start with a pencil sketch, and then scan and work out the design on a computer (you can just pick up the drawing you like and process it).

Tip: when editing an image, make the black color as rich as possible by setting the CMYK sliders 100% so that the printer uses more toner when printing - this will increase the chances of transferring the pattern to the tabletop.

Step 2

Getting Started.

Ideally, if you have the opportunity to print the entire picture on one sheet. But if not, print the picture on an ordinary printer on A4 sheets, after breaking the pattern into separate sheets in the graphics program that you use (functions - "tile") and print. This project has turned out 9 sheets.

Then carefully cut off the excess, white stripes on the edges, with a knife or scissors and draw a pattern from the sheets, image down, align and glue together with tape. For convenience, it is better to use a glass surface with a backlit bottom.

Attention: Please note that the laser printer is used for printing, because an inkjet printed image is not suitable for image transfer. Another important point: make sure before printing that your picture is mirrored to that which should end up on the table top.

Step 3

Cut the boards to the desired size.

A total of 4 boards will be required - 2 short and 2 long ones - they are mounted on the bottom of the table top and are the mounting for the table legs. Be careful with the size, consider the indent from the edge of the table and the width of the legs -"Measure seven times - cut once". and saw off with a saw: 41 5/8 "- 2; 18" -2.

Step 4

For the convenience of attaching the boards to the tabletop and the legs, in this project, a special mechanism was used to extrude the recesses so that it was more convenient to tighten the screws. At home, you can use joinery glue, dowels, special corners, etc. for fastening.

Step 5

Everything is ready to assemble the table. First, we assemble the table frame - we will connect the legs and the boards (you can choose the type of attachment yourself - dowels, screws, corners). In this project used screws. For ease of operation, the joining surfaces will be spread with carpenter glue and shrunk with a scrape for better fixation. After the glue dries, proceed to the final fixation with screws.

After the “frame” of the table is ready, we attach the tabletop in the same way.

All the table is assembled and ready.

Step 6

After the assembly of the table, we sand its surface, use sandpaper, starting from the rough and ending with the shallowest; especially the tabletop, because on it we will transfer the picture. For speed and convenience it is better to use a grinding machine.

After grinding, using a tool, we will make dents and age the table, but you can not do that.

Step 7

Getting Started.

It is better to use non-toxic and non-oil paint (for example, linseed oil, stain) to preserve the texture of the tree.

There is one interesting enough recipe that will replace the paint and age the tree: this will require vinegar, steel wool and a can. Recipe: put the steel wool in a jar and pour a sufficient amount of vinegar, do not close the lid and leave for a few days. Steel wool will begin to decay and bubble, changing color to orange and then brown.Then mix with a stick - in the end will get a reddish-brownish tint. You can also mix vinegar with a cup of black tea, then eventually we get a gray tint.

Despite the fact that the effect obtained after using this recipe is very interesting and beautiful, we still recommend using modern paints, for example, stain or linseed oil.

Spray paint with thin layers with a brush or sponge, apply several layers if necessary.

Step 8

Transfer the picture to the tabletop.

This is perhaps the most important part of the project.

Clean the surface of the tabletop from dust. We put the pre-printed and prepared drawing image down. Align the picture and fix it on one side with masking tape to the table top - this is for convenience, so that we can quickly put it back. We drop the drawing with the table top (it will hang attached to the edge of the table top) and we will apply the acrylic gel medium to the table top. the gel dries quickly.Then, beginning with the fixed edge, we return the drawing to the tabletop; smoothing the picture with a roller to avoid bubbles. After the drawing is completely placed on the tabletop, once again carefully iron it with a roller.   Do everything quickly and most importantly very carefully.

After the gel is completely dry, remove the paint tape. Moisten the surface of the paper using a sponge, and begin to wash the paper. The idea is that wet paper will leave laser toner on a dried acrylic gel. This part of the project is rather dirty and time-consuming, but it is exciting to see how the drawing begins to appear on the table top. Remove as much paper as possible, try not to erase the drawing. If part of the picture is still erased, this can be corrected by retouching.

Step 9

Fixing and protection of the worktop pattern.

It is better to use polyurethane water-based varnish (multi-Protect-Eco) to finish and protect the table. For better protection, layers 5 must be applied.
